What to Do on the Isle of Wight This May Half Term

May half term is the perfect time to explore the Isle of Wight – the sun is (usually) shining, the countryside is in full bloom, and there’s a fantastic mix of family-friendly activities, exciting events, and free days out.

1. Blackgang Chine – Wild West Week (24th May – 1st June 2025)

Saddle up for a rootin’-tootin’ adventure at Blackgang Chine’s Wild West Week! From Cowboy Karaoke and Howedown workshops to Quick Draw Shootout Games, it’s a week of immersive fun and entertainment for all ages at one of the island’s most iconic attractions.

2. National Trust Fossil Walks at Brook Bay

Step back in time with Wight Coast Fossils on a guided fossil walk along the stunning coastline at Brook. Discover 130-million-year-old dinosaur fossils and learn about the prehistoric wonders beneath your feet. Walks run throughout half term and cost just £5 per adult and £3 per child.

3. Tapnell Farm Park – Outdoor Fun & Aqua Park

A firm family favourite, Tapnell Farm offers a whole day of fun – meet friendly animals, conquer the indoor soft play, bounce on the giant jumping pillow, or take on the Aqua Park’s inflatable obstacle course. A fantastic mix of adventure and relaxation.

4. Explore the Needles & Alum Bay

Enjoy one of the Isle of Wight’s most famous landmarks with stunning views, the scenic chairlift, sweet shops, traditional glass-blowing demonstrations, and boat trips to the iconic Needles rocks, all in one place. It’s a great day out for the whole family, and it’s mostly free (you have to pay for the iconic chairlift)!

5. Beach Days

Nothing beats a day by the sea. Whether you’re paddling in the waves, building sandcastles, or simply soaking up the sunshine, the Isle of Wight’s beaches like Shanklin, Sandown, and Colwell Bay are perfect for a classic family beach day.

6. Walk the Coastal Path

With over 60 miles of coastline, the Isle of Wight offers breathtaking walks. Try the Freshwater to Compton stretch for dramatic cliffs, golden beaches, and plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities. Ideal for older children or families who love an active adventure.

7. Butterfly World & Fountain World

Step into a tropical paradise where butterflies flutter freely around you. Younger children will be enchanted, and the surrounding garden with koi ponds and fountains provides a peaceful place for a family to wander.

8. Wildheart Animal Sanctuary

Located by the beach in Sandown, this rescue sanctuary is home to lions, lemurs, monkeys and more. It’s not only an amazing place to visit, but every ticket helps support rescued and endangered animals. Educational, ethical, and full of animal magic.
