The Isle of Wight has 68 miles of coastline to explore where you can discover quaint sailing towns and award winning beaches with their expanse of golden sands, all whilst breathing in the fresh sea air of our shorelines.
50% of the Isle of Wight is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), with the haven of wildlife and breath-taking scenery you are spoilt for choice for natural places to explore.
Did you know that the island has 500 miles of award winning footpaths and cycle routes to enjoy, and is without doubt one of the best ways to experience the Island’s beauty. So why not dust off those boots, stick a warm coat on for the colder months and set out with our guide to discover some great routes on the Isle of Wight.
Hamstead Trail – in the West Wight of the Isle of Wight is a beautiful seven mile long family-friendly walking route. It crosses from the north to south across salt marshes, woodlands and open countryside with lots of photo ops to spot the local wildlife too. Take a look – Hamstead Trail
Or, Shepherds Trail – a great walk for the whole family, starting at the centre of the Island at Carisbrooke Castle you head south across chalky hillsides, passing by historic manor houses and across the rolling countryside with stunning views to finish at Chine Farm. At 65 miles long it is one of the best-known and popular long-distance coastal walks in the country. It’s particularly attractive to walkers because of the absence of steep hills and the spectacular sea views along most of the route. Sections of the walk are easy to complete in a day, or if you are really keen, you could do the whole lot over several days.
Make sure you check out Isle of Wight Walking Festival that is held for keen hikers, relaxed wanderers, and curious explorers alike, with many guided walks taking place in May and October.
One not to be missed is Walk the Wight is an annual iconic walk that raises funds for the Mountbatten hospice on the Isle of Wight. It will be held on Sunday 8 May 2022, to register for the event visit Mountbatten website.
Depending on your ability and fitness level, there are five routes across the Isle of Wight to choose from:
Full Walk – Bembridge to Alum Bay- 26 Miles
First Half – Bembridge to Newport – 12 miles
Second Half – Newport to Alum Bay – 14 miles
Flat Walk – Sandown to Newport – 8 miles
