Afternoon tea is one of life’s little luxuries and on the Isle of Wight, it’s served with a generous helping of charm, local flavour, and beautiful surroundings.
From thatched tearooms in historic villages to peaceful countryside cafés, here are four top spots to enjoy afternoon tea on the Island.
1. The Royal Hotel, Ventnor
Elegant Afternoon Tea with Coastal Views
The Royal Hotel in Ventnor is a local landmark and a favourite for those seeking a more refined afternoon tea experience. Think crisp white tablecloths, perfectly cut finger sandwiches, fresh-baked scones, and an indulgent array of miniature cakes and patisserie, all served with your choice of tea or bubbly. The sea views from the garden terrace are just the icing on the cake. Prices start from £30 per person, one of the best places to go on the island (we promise you!)
2. The Old Thatch Teashop, Shanklin Old Village
Picture-Perfect & Full of Character
Step into one of the most photographed buildings on the Island, The Old Thatch Teashop in Shanklin Old Village. This enchanting thatched cottage serves up a wonderfully traditional afternoon tea in quirky, cosy surroundings. Homemade cakes, fresh scones, dainty sandwiches, and a long list of speciality teas make it a must-visit. The garden is especially beautiful in spring and summer.
It’s a firm favourite with our guests here in Shanklin!
3. Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary Café, Wroxall
Tea with a Twist — and a Great Cause
For something truly unique, enjoy your afternoon tea surrounded by the gentle hum of contented donkeys. The onsite Grazers Café at the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary offers a simple but delicious cream tea, plus cakes and hot drinks, with proceeds supporting the care of rescued animals.
You can enjoy your tea and then wander the sanctuary grounds afterwards – a wholesome, feel-good way to spend an afternoon. It’s FREE to visit here.
4. The Quirky Teapot, Newport
Afternoon Tea with a Retro Twist
If you like your tea with a side of nostalgia, The Quirky Teapot is the place to go. Set just outside Newport at Staplehurst Grange, this colourful tearoom is filled with vintage charm – from mismatched crockery to retro tunes playing in the background. Afternoon tea is served with flair: handmade cakes, classic scones, finger sandwiches and plenty of tea, all in a cosy, relaxed setting. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 11am to 4pm.
